What gives love meaning?
It's ironic almost oxymoronic that love is given meaning by opposites. Think of it no grief, no sorrow the absence of a sense of loss,...
naught shelters thee who wilt not shelter me
The Hound of Heaven
One day, years ago, I saw the devil which put behind me once and for all any doubts I might have had over the existence of God. We don’t live in an irredeemably wicked world there are two sides to the coin. On one evil, ugliness, hatred and abuse on the other love ,beauty, charity, joy .However, I believe the moral law bends eventually and inevitably towards justice there is a God of love whose light shines brighter than the darkness and a choice to be made. Every soul is unique and no two souls enjoy the same relationship with God.It is a state of affairs many religious apologists don’t take into account. Like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle we each have our own place in the picture remove one and the whole becomes incomplete. That’s not to say that questioning your place in the picture and indeed trying to understand its totality isn’t important it is . But we need to understand that everything is relative to our place on the board and that only the creator understands the whole so as Pope Francis said ‘ who am I to judge?’ We are but one drop in the ocean.
However God has given to us two huge signposts as to his overall intent they are the twin gifts of love and wisdom which are the keys to the door of enlightenment. All my life I have sought after why ?and how? I’ve come to appreciate the obvious footprints of the creator that through wisdom we can read the language of God in the world around us and by love grasp the essence of his will.
I’m 63 years old and lived many parallel lives but I have always been absorbed by a hunger for meaning as Mark Twain wrote ‘ The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.’ Have I discovered why ? Not yet but I think I now understand the nature of the path that leads to the answer and the light that was once so distant and faint has become clearer with each step taken lesson learned and blessing of love given. This blog is by way of a chronicle of my journey and my discovery of my spiritual thin places, where as the Celts believed , we are at our closest to reality. If you have any observations good or bad questions or seek a dialogue please feel free to reach out.
Fellow seekers if you have any observations good or bad, questions or simply seek to exchange ideas I would be so happy to hear from you.
